The most fabled and prolific playback singer of the Indian Music industry S.P. Balasubrahmanyam departed from this world on 25th September 2020. His demise has left millions of people grief-stricken and also created an inexplicable void in our hearts. Affectionately known as ‘Paadum Nila’ (Singing Moon), S.P.B saw a skyrocketed career in the colossal world of cinema. With 40,000 plus songs in 16 languages during his enviable career, he also ascertained achievements like countless national and state awards and the coveted Padma Shri and Padma Bhusan. He belonged to a special lineage of singers whose voice would cast a spell over generations.
Early life & initial phase of the career of Balasubrahmanyam
Being born into a Telugu Brahmin family in 1946 in Nellore, it was the music that fascinated Sripathi Panditharadhyula Balasubrahmanyam the most. His father was also a singer and actor in plays. Without any formal training in singing, he went on to join hands with Ilayaraja and his brother Gangai Amaran to form a music troupe. That is when composer SP Kodandapani spotted Balasubrahmanyam’s golden voice at a singing competition and gave him a break.
He knocked the industry gateway when veterans like T M Soundararajan (TMS) and P B Srinivas have already captured the space. Making his golden voice a sole strength, he put his soul to carve out a career curvature which is indeed an endowment for us. The height that he built over the years and the level of admiration he saw are truly commendable.
