Rekha: A Perennial Beauty that defines timeless talent & turns aloofness into an achievement!
Being alone is daunting. The thought of being solitary throughout your life is frightening. But spinning aloofness into achievement is perhaps impossible for anyone unless that person is Rekha. Once she said, being lonely, is my achievement, and we believe this statement is somewhere or the other absolute factual. Grown-up into a south Indian family the actress has craved love since her childhood. She was born on 10th October 1954 as Bhanurekha Ganeshan. Her father Gemini Ganesan and mother Pushpavati were also artists. But, unfortunately, her parents didn’t have a healthy relationship that eventually affected Rekha.
The actress stepped into the world of showbiz at the tendering age of 13 to support her mother financially who had separated from Rekha’s father. As a child, Rekha had no interest in acting but the flatten childhood imposed her to work in the film industry. Thus, she acted in a Telugu film named Rangula Ratnam in 1966 and later she moved forward to Hindi cinema. As a teenager who didn’t know a single word of Hindi, Rekha tried her luck in Bollywood and gracefully succeeded.
Bhanurekha Ganeshan debut with Sawan Bhadon and became a star in just a fleeting time period. Well, her acting career is unrivaled. Though without gazing into her cinematic contribution an honor to her will be a total breach. On that account let’s squint into some mind-blowing performance of the diva.
6 quintessential performances of the ever-so-green Rekha
1. Muqaddar ka Sikandar
Zohra Bai, a classic dancer who is selflessly in love with Sikandar. Rekha was already at her career’s peak and the mesmerizing presence of Zohra Bai even surpassed the lead actress Rakhi. Her gleaming eyes and exquisitely refined acting are unparalleled. Salaam-e-Ishq meri Jaan is a song that is still remembered with all the praise.
2. Ghar
In the same year when Muqaddar ka Sikandar released i.e. 1978, Rekha came up with one more top-notch performance in the movie Ghar. She played the character of Arti Chandra the beautiful wife of Vikas (Vinod Mehra). The paradise of Arti-Vikas gets upside down when Arti is gang-raped and the couple had to face the upheaval taboo of society and the thin awkwardness that has grown between the couple.
3. Khoobsurat
A troublesome girl enters a reticent house and thereafter all the chaos begins. Versatile Rekha this time opt for a comic and mischievous role and the portrayal of maliciously playful Manju Dayal earned her the best actress award. In the directorial of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, sterling Rekha shined bright.
4. Silsila
How can we even forget the oh-so-gorgeous character of Chandni? In this opulent masterstroke of Yashraj, Rekha played the character of a stunning woman who is married to Sanjeev Kumar. On the other hand, Amitabh had to marry the pregnant widow of her demised brother. The chemistry between Rekha and Amitabh was revelry appreciated and it turned out as the blockbuster of the year.
5. Umrao Jaan
When Rekha flaunted her ada in the aesthetic song “Dil cheez kya hai aap meri Jaan lijiye”. The entire nation delved into her majestic expressions, graceful dance, and immortal beauty. The depiction of Umrao Jaan in the direction of Muzaffar Ali is counted among the best women-centric movies.
6. Aastha
Rekha taking all the stereotype thinking of the social norms into her pocket, choose the character of Mansi who is happily married to Amar (Om Puri) and has a daughter. But the tribulations begins when she is unknowingly pushed into the world of prostitution. Rekha’s character as Mansi was all applauded by the audiences and film critics.
Rekha has played many more characters that showed the valiant side of her. Films like Khiladi, Khoon Bhari Maang, Utsav, Phool bane Angaare, Sansar is considered among her finest act-conducts.
Misfortune, failure in love, and allegations
Like any other woman, Rekha has dreamt of having a contented life by settling down with a responsible man. But, as it is witnessed the fate has always offered her with disappointments. In an interview, she stout-heartedly accepted that she is in love with Amitabh Bacchan.
Rekha is also linked to having affair with his co-star Vinod Mehra, it was speculated that they have been secretly married but in the same interview, she denied and said that they were well-wishers of each other. Moving ahead, in the year 1990, Rekha married Mukesh Agarwal, an industrialist based in Delhi. Mukesh was introduced by a mutual friend who claimed him to be Rekha’s die-hard fan. One fine day the latter proposed and followed by this they got married. Yet again destiny rejected Rekha’s happiness and Mukesh found to be hanging latched with Rekha’s Dupatta.
It is said that Mukesh was dealing with chronic depression and right after completing 8 months of their wedding, he committed suicide. The allegations of his death were all blamed at the actress, however, Mukesh had left a suicide note writing “Don’t blame anyone”. Mukesh’s family alleged her with various offensive terms like a witch, man-eater, and many more.
The mysterious case of Vermilion and bridal look
Rekha has also been criticized for wearing vermilion (sindoor) and dressing up like a newly married bride. It is rumored that she decks-up herself in the loving memory of her husband, while some gossips that she prettifies those attire for Amitabh. When asked her about the same, she revokes all the facts and says she does as she finds it suitable to her personality.
Rekha has faced many ups and downs in her life. She was unloved by her father, imposed by her mother, rejected by many in terms of love. The whole bibliography of Rekha can be grasped by a book authored by Yasser Usman“Rekha: The Untold Story”. Rekha has lived her life in lonesome. She is so strung with her loneliness that she, after shooting for a month left the movie “Fitoor” as she found it quite similar to her reality.
Keeping all the allegations aside, personally, we honor the courage of this bold lady who dared to challenge the society and lived all her life in an aloof state, which is assuredly no less than an achievement in a patriarchial fraternity. Well, Rekha may have faced many hurdles in her life but her fans have never ever stopped their love. The unending support and love of her fans are still beyond zenith.
